Mt. Laguna, CA (Desert View Overlook)

Heading out before dawn to catch the sun's early colors spreading over the Anza Borrego Desert below -

I looked down and nearly stepped on a true lost sole - only the rubber base of a thick heeled, left shoe.

Late for the train

Found at the Bergen, Norway train station - tiny, cute and never worn . . . a toddler's right fake leather pink dress up shoe, H&M brand (Made in China) - size 20-21.

in Bergen, Norway

Can you see them? Glued all over the front of this little boutique shop in Bergen - Lost Soles, no mates - all different shoes up there!

Belugas at Bourbonhamma, Norway

Immediately upon landing at Burbonhamma in Belsund Sound (Svalbard, Norway) - a Lost Sole - a right, weathered rubber boot sole (no upper).

Bourbonhamma is the site of an old beluga whale processing plant. Bleached white skulls and bones (and a few wrecked boats) are the only items left there now.

Ny London, Svalbard Norway

Camp Mansfield at Ny London in Svalbard (Norway) is now rubble and ruins. Among the rust near an old stove, lies what is left of a Lost Sole - just the flat leather sole with barely visible stitching holes around its edges. Camp Mansfield was built decades ago to mine marble, then abandonded when the quality of the marble was so bad, it crumbled like limestone.

Boot Hill, Lake Morena (SD, CA)

Leaving Lake Morena today - driving through the wind, wires and weeds of the back country of San Diego . . . lost soles who haven't been on these fence posts before . . . boots baking in the hot afternoon sun.

Ready to Tango in Chula Vista

Tan and tall in the weeds, this is the exact position I found a Jolie Victoria lost sole when I walked through a field of dusty dying daisies.

Peabody's Turkey Burgers

Encinitas, CA: In a small mall off the freeway - Peabody's Pub - that serves the greatest turkey burgers you can imagine. Outside on a low wall, an Addias sandal (size 6) - a right, newish, very clean - lost and separated from its mate.

Left at the Library (Oceanside, CA)

The weather is warming but this tiny little lost sole probably won't be going to the beach again - a leftie, good condition with beach sand - lost on the concrete stoop in front of the library.

Chucked Out In Chula Vista

Bent, broken and sun rotted - this Brahma brand (right) men's shoe has been posted and is standing sentinel at one end of the Chula Vista to Silver Strand path - inviting hikers to enjoy the fields in South Bay.

Flotsam in the Falklands

On our way to Antarctica, we stopped at Carcass Island in the Falklands. Along with tons of seaweed a blue and white Lost Sole had washed up on the beach where we landed to hike.

Trashed in Gila Bend, Arizona

Not lost actually, but my pair of Nike athletic shoes have made it to the end of their very long road trip this morning. Today in Gila Bend, Arizona - was the last day of a 5 month driving trip across, around and through the US and Canada - from San Diego to Desolation Sound, B.C., Canada to Eastport, Maine to the bayous of Louisiana and back to San Diego - a 19,640 mile jeep journey with just about as many digital photos taken . . . and this pair of Nike's smelling more and more each day until my socks at night would reek of old sneaker odor.

Last week the sole started separating on the left shoe. Now they're headed for the landfill in Arizona - together, a pair - they were great!

Passed over near Pikeville, TN

Found on a lonely 2-lane back road east of Pikeville, TN - a fallen sole, a right boot - dark blue/grey vinyl with fabric that feels like indoor/outdoor carpeting for the upper. No brands, no names, no numbers . . .
